To those with poetic hearts,
Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them… And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. – Genesis
God is the pioneer of art. He created, is creating, and willforever create good things. He paints every sunset with hues of pink and orange, and he lights up the night sky with the glorious ocean of stars. He cherishes the exotic flower that no human soul will see, and he carries each sparrow from open sky to tree. He declared the overarching goodness of his creation and then we came. We are the pinnacle of created things not because of who we are but because whose image we are.
Your life is important and precious to God. You’re his artwork after all. Every person you meet is an image bearer. They were made for great things, glorious things.
For we are his workmanship [ποίημα//poema], created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10
I like that. Poema. Workmanship. Masterpiece, as one translations puts it. God started with an image bearer and is now writing his poem into each life. A poem with highs, lows, and all the rhythmic jives between. The poem of God’s people begins with Christ and aims hearts toward good works. What are those works? Simply, it is us pushing back the darkness in this world. To fight against injustice. To bring hope and help to the poor. To be a family for the orphaned and widowed. To show mercy and grace in the midst of persecution. To love the unlovable. To offer God’s gift of forgiveness and restoration through Christ to all people.
The poem of your life is to establish a foretaste of his sweet kingdom in a world that offers a thousand bitter tastes at every turn. The poem of your life is one that shines light and truth down the alleys of darkened lies. This is poem he is setting out to write. The poem of your life. It starts with one person, one conversation, and one kind act of love at a time.
All for the glory and fame of Jesus,
